Block Fences: How do they compare?

We’ve said it before: Every element of the homes at The Vineyards of Amarillo are well thought out to be the lowest-maintenance, longest lasting choice. From our quarts countertops to our seamless showers, our goal is to make lasting homes that make owning a home as easy as possible.

When talking about the regularly required maintenance of homeownership, fences are often among the first topic of conversation. Broken slats, warping and discoloration are only a few of the problems that can cost you time and money.

To make an informed decision, you have to know your options. There are four main options:

  1. Wood Fences
  2. Vinyl Fences
  3. Metal Fences
  4. Block Fences

Why Not Wood?

For starters, wood fences are temporary structures that are being added to a permanent dwelling. While wood is the most common option, it is among the most problematic for long-term sustainability. Wood fences will face the following concerns:

  • needs to be maintained every couple years (or less) to retain appearance
  • needs to be replaced every 15 years or less
  • take on damage more than other options
  • can change color and shape over time
  • can be more expensive over time

Why Not Vinyl?

Vinyl fences share many concerns that wood fences do. While moisture doesn’t affect vinyl fencing as much, Amarillo’s summer heat can cause serious concerns for the longevity of your fence. Vinyl fences will face the following concerns:

  • not sturdy
  • take on damage more than other options
  • can be more expensive over time

Why Not Metal?

Metal fencing is, in popular opinion, the least attractive of the top 4 options. Metal fences will face the following concerns:

  • can be very heavy
  • rust causes long and short term concerns
  • paint peeling causes a need for repainting every few years.
  • can get very expensive for aesthetic options

Why Choose Block?

Block fencing has many advantages over it’s less permanent counterparts. We find it to be the “best of all worlds” option that make for great looking, high functioning, worry-free fences. Block fences have the following advantages:

  • long-lasting
  • durable
  • requires little-to-no maintenance
  • most economical over time
  • keeps/increases resale value
  • can be mixed and matched with other materials

In short, block fences are yet another no-corners-cut feature of the homes at The Vineyards of Amarillo.
